Pacemaker Implantation

A pacemaker is a small device that sends electrical impulses to the heart muscle to coordinate the action of the various parts of the heart (top and bottom chambers, left and right chambers).

There are various types of pacemakers. Most commonly you would need one because of a slow heart rhythm. Sometimes your heart rhythm will alternate between fast and slow and a pacemaker would be needed to complement tablet treatment. Other types are used when the heart pumping action is diminished. Your cardiologist will discuss which type  of pacemaker you need based on your heart condition.

They are generally done under local anaesthetic in a cathlab in surgical theatre style setting. Your device will be appropriately programmed for your condition. A check up chest x-ray will be undertaken. You will generally go home within a few hours.

Relevant recovery advice and discussion of medication will be covered before you leave.
