Electric Cardioversion

Electric cardioversion is a procedure used to correct many types of heart rhythm disturbances most commonly  atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.

Your doctor would have started blood thinning treatment that should be uninterrupted for a minimum of one month. The procedure is done under  short acting anaesthesia supervised by a trained anaesthetist. Your cardiologist and cardiac nurse will then administer a controlled electric shock to the heart using specialized devices.

There are minor risks associated with this will be discussed by your cardiologist. You will be closely monitored to reduce and mitigate any risks.

Following your procedure you will be observed in our recovery area for a couple of hours before being discharged home.

Specifics of your medication will be discussed.
