Rukshan is an Interventional radiologist based at North Shore and Auckland City Hospitals. He consults privately at Lumina Interventional Radiology.

Rukshan studied Medicine at Guy’s, King’s and St. Thomas’ Medical school – King’s College London in the UK.

He did an intercalated BSc (First class honours) during Medical School in Aerospace Physiology and amongst all the hard work, he had fun spinning around in a Royal Air Force centrifuge and experiencing the G Forces placed on fighter pilots, as well as spending time in their rapid depressurisation chambers.

After house officer jobs, he spent a year working in the emergency department and undertaking a research Master’s degree in Clinical and Experimental Medicine from University College London. He went onto Clinical Radiology training in London, UK and completed the extended (6-year) Clinical Radiology + Interventional Radiology speciality curriculum, allowing him to develop IR competencies from a very early stage in his training. He also holds the European Board of Interventional Radiology certification (EBIR).

To advance his training Rukshan completed year-long fellowships in Vascular & Interventional Radiology at Guy’s & St. Thomas’ Hospital (UK), at McGill University Hospitals (Canada) and at Auckland City Hospital (New Zealand).

These fellowships encompassed all areas of interventional radiology, including treatments for cancer (Interventional Oncology), Vascular Intervention (Peripheral vascular disease & Aortic Intervention) and Paediatric intervention.

He is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Auckland City Hospital and his focus areas are on chronic limb threatening ischaemia (peripheral arterial disease), interventional oncology and uterine fibroid embolisation.

Rukshan is passionate about practising IR and applying its innovative techniques to benefit patients. He lives in Auckland with his young family and enjoys hiking, mountain biking, skiing and is always looking for the next adventure!
