Rahul undertook his medical degree at the University of Nottingham, UK graduating in 2002. He stayed on in Nottingham for surgical and then radiology training becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiology in 2009.

Rahul undertook a year’s Interventional fellowship in Nottingham before moving across the pond in 2012 to do two further year-long fellowships in Interventional Radiology and Abdominal Imaging at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. In addition to this Rahul has also gained the European Board of Interventional Radiology(EBIR).

Following this, Rahul moved to Auckland in 2014 to take up the position of Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Waitemata DHB. Since July 2020, he has been part of the Northern Regional Interventional Radiology team covering Auckland City, Waitemata and Northland.

He is the Clinical Lead of Interventional Radiology at North Shore Hospital, where he is committed to developing and growing the service.

During his time there, Rahul has set up a number of services, including tumour (liver/ kidney) ablation and uterine artery embolisation (for fibroids and adenomyosis). He has also introduced novel procedures to New Zealand, including percutaneous cholangioscopy (for the diagnosis and treatment of bile duct stones and tumours), thyroid ablation (for symptomatic benign thyroid nodules) and breast cryoablation (for small malignant tumours).

Rahul lives on the Shore with his veterinarian wife, four young Kiwi kids and retired guide dog.

His private work is through Lumina Radiology, Northshore.

Rahul’s services at Cardia:

1. Vascular Access:
   • Porta Cath insertion/ removal,
   • PICC/ Hickman and Groshong Line insertions.
2. Embolisations:

• • Uterine Artery Embolisation for fibroids/ adenomyosis.
  • Ovarian vein embolisation for pelvic venous congestion.
  • Varicocele Embolisation. Prostate embolisation.
  • Geniculate artery embolisation.

Feeding tube insertion:

Gastrostomy and Nasogastric tube insertions.

Oncology:

• Trans arterial Chemoembolisation for liver tumours (HCC and haemangiomas). Percutaneous ablations (Microwave, Cryoablations and RFA) for liver, renal and breast.
• Portal vein embolisation prior to liver surgery.
• Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiogram and stenting to relieve obstructed bile ducts causing jaundice.
• Percutaneous Cholangioscopy for treatment of bile duct/ gallstones.
• Image guided biopsies for cancer diagnosis.
• Simple and Tunnelled Ascitic/ Pleural drains for recurrent ascites and pleural effusions.

Varicose Veins:

Ultrasound assessment and minimally invasive walk in/ walk out endovenous RFA and ultrasound guided sclerotherapy of varicose veins.

Adrenal Vein Sampling

Thyroid and Parathyroid Ablation for benign symptomatic nodules.

IVC filter insertion and removal.
