Procedures
- Preparation: Before the procedure, you’ll meet with your healthcare team to discuss the process and any specific instructions. You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure.
- The Procedure: Insertion of the Port-a-Cath is done under local anesthesia and sedation. The procedure involves:
- Creating an Incision: A small incision is made, usually in the chest area, to insert the Port.
- Placing the Port: The Port-a-Cath is inserted under the skin and connected to a catheter that is threaded into a large vein near your heart.
- Securing the Device: The Port is carefully positioned and secured. A small bump or “port” will be visible under the skin where the device is placed.
- Recovery: After the procedure, you’ll be monitored for a short time. You might experience some discomfort or swelling at the site, which should improve within a few days.
- Easy Access: Your healthcare providers can easily access the Port for treatments or blood draws without multiple needle sticks.
- Minimal Maintenance: The Port requires regular flushing to keep it clean and functional. Your healthcare team will provide instructions on how to care for it.
- Infection Prevention: Regular care and maintenance are essential to prevent infections.
- Follow-Up: Regular check-ups will ensure the Port is functioning properly and to address any concerns you may have.
